Nalah Centre
The Nalah Centre is part of the Domestic Violence Justice Response Program (DVJR). The Nalah Centre offers support and advocacy for victims (complainants) of intimate partner violence (IPV) in collaboration with community agencies and Government of Alberta. This program is designed to be a single point of contact for victims and survivors of IPV navigating criminal docket court.
- The Nalah Centre supports victims of intimate partner violence on charged IPV files. The case workers offer support from the time of the incident, to completion of the matter in criminal docket court.
- The Nalah Centre receives direct referrals from Edmonton Police Service
Services provided by the Case Workers:
- Information on the criminal docket court process, including court updates, bail hearing outcomes, release conditions and court orientation
- Information on Victim’s Rights and assistance completing Victim of Crime documents
- Discuss complainant’s wishes regarding conditions and court outcomes. These wishes (and voice of the complainant) are then shared during Early Case Conferencing (ECC) meetings with community partners, including members from the Crown Prosecutors office, EPS, Children Services, Probation and defense/duty counsel.
- Ongoing emotional support
- Safety planning
- Resources and referrals to community agencies
- Services are provided by phone, or clients may choose to attend the ECC room at the Edmonton Law Courts (outside of courtroom 268) on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays before noon.
*Note: The Nalah Centre does NOT provide legal advice, make decisions for clients, provide counselling, or provide assistance in cases other than IPV.
