Who We Are

Welcome to enCompass Community Safety Agency (previously known as the Edmonton John Howard Society)!

We’ve been serving the Edmonton area since 1949, with a proud history of supporting those who have been affected by crime and social disorder. To this day, we remain committed to helping individuals reintegrate from justice and related systems, creating safe and vibrant communities.

What We Do

enCompass provides holistic services and wraparound supports that address the root causes of crime and social disorder. We do this through preventative and restorative activities including release planning, housing, safety planning, employment transition, education, substance recovery, cultural supports and more.

By exemplifying care, compassion and understanding, we are laying the foundations for positive change.

The same team. The same services. The same facilities.

As we transition from the Edmonton John Howard Society to enCompass, we continue to do the same rewarding work we’re known for in our communities.

Our Purpose

We build safe and inclusive communities by supporting individuals to navigate change – and lead healthy, meaningful lives.

Our Core Values

  • Respect – Every individual has intrinsic worth and has the right to be treated with dignity.
  • Potential – Every individual has the capacity for growth and change.
  • Safety – Every individual has the right to live in a safe community with access to justice and other measures that resolve conflict and restore harmony.
  • Accountability – Every individual is responsible for their actions and can learn how to be accountable through their capacity for change.
  • Community – We believe in connectedness and that the determinants of crime and social disorder, and their solutions, are found within community.
  • Collaboration – We believe in the power of collaboration to achieve a healthy and safe community.

Our Commitment to Equity

At enCompass, we fundamentally believe that every person, with their varying experiences, circumstances, backgrounds, and identities, has intrinsic worth and the right to be treated with dignity and respect.

Whether you are engaged in services from one of our many programs, are a community partner, or a volunteer/staff member, we strive to:

  • welcome you as you are
  • reduce barriers to participation
  • listen and respond to ongoing feedback
  • invest in ongoing (un)learning as an agency

As an agency, we are conscious of the historic and ongoing systemic oppression and biases that individuals and groups may experience, and together as a team we are committed to creating spaces and offering programs that are safer for those we work with and for. We are also committed to continuous reflection, through learning and unlearning, on our journey towards building a more equitable community.

We look forward to welcoming you!
