Compassionate, Knowledgeable Support Every Step of the Way

The court system plays a vital role in ensuring safety for survivors of domestic violence. It also promotes accountability and opportunities for those who have caused harm to change.

enCompass is here to support victims at every step of the process. Staff provide compassionate support and guidance at a challenging process at a difficult time.

We offer two FREE programs designed to provide guidance at different stages of the process. It is run in cooperation with other community partners. (Note: these programs do not provide legal advice.)

Stage 1: Docket Court (Nalah)

Nalah Centre: This program is a single point of contact for victims whose cases will be appearing in criminal docket court. Following a referral by Edmonton Police Service, you are assigned a personal case worker who will share valuable information, resources and hands-on support to help you through the process.

The program can also introduce survivors to services and resources designed to support their ongoing journey to escape the cycle of abuse.

The purpose of docket court is to decide next steps. For example, can the situation be resolved through a resolution, or should it proceed to criminal trial?

Stage 2: Criminal Court (DVCAP)

Once a trial hearing is scheduled to appear before Domestic Violence (Provincial) Court or King’s Bench Criminal Courts, victims can receive support and advocacy services through the Domestic Violence Complaint Assistance Program (DVCAP).

The program provides support & advocacy from trained court workers, to assist in navigating the court processes. The enCompass team strives to simplify the process for you to ensure your comfort and understanding.

These courts can support survivors by providing enforceable protective services and holding individuals accountable for the harm they have caused.

At enCompass, we use the terms ‘survivor’ and ‘victim’ interchangeably, recognizing that each individual may relate more closely to one term over the other. We honour and respect the diverse experiences and identities of those affected by family violence and strive to provide inclusive, compassionate support for all.
