Domestic Violence Complainant Assistance Program (DVCAP)
DVCAP is part of the Domestic Violence Justice Response Program (DVJR). DVCAP offers support and advocacy for victims (complainants) of domestic violence while navigating Domestic Violence Court or King’s Bench Criminal Courts.
Services provided by the Court Support Workers:
- Information on the criminal court process including court updates, bail hearing outcomes, release conditions and sentencing information
- Information on Victim’s Rights and assistance completing Victim of Crime documents
- Assistance with facilitating communication with Crown Prosecutors
- Court preparation and orientation
- Support victims through evidence review
- Court accompaniment (including preliminary hearings, trial, sentencing)
- Ongoing emotional support
- Safety planning
- Resources and referrals to community agencies
- A Remote Testimony Room is also available in certain circumstances
- Services may be provided in person at the Edmonton Law Courts, by phone, and virtually
For assistance in court preparation and support, please contact us at least one month prior to the trial/court date, or as soon as possible. Self-referrals or referrals from supporting professionals are accepted.
*Note: The Domestic Violence Complainant Assistance Program does NOT provide legal advice, make decisions for clients, provide counselling, discuss details of the offence, or provide assistance in cases other than domestic violence.
